Interview

Talk Shop with Nicole Katz, Director of Paper Chase Press

Since Paper Chase Press set up shop in 1976, the role of print has evolved. Luckily, so have they. Take a gander at their shop and their website, it’s clear that they’re setting a whole new expectation for quality printing. Don’t just take our word for it. They’ve done work with brands like Citizens of Humanity, Nasty Gal, LACMA, and the Ace Hotel.

Nicole Katz runs the operation with her husband from the heart of Hollywood. She took the reigns from her parents, so Paper Chase is truly a family operation. They print, bind, and do all production in house, by hand, with a stellar eye for design. And with special projects like Infoshop LA, they’re rethinking not only the role of print, but the power of it.

We can’t wait to talk to Nicole about her time as Director of Paper Chase and what she has planned for the future. Read more from Nicole below and if you’re in LA, RSVP to Talk Shop Thursday, July 27.

“Our abundant screen time has made any chance for a physical connection more valuable than ever.”

It seems like your location in the heart of Hollywood is a big part of the shop. How has the neighborhood changed since you first got there?

Mostly it hasn’t changed at all! Its just as seedy as ever...

When and why did you start Infoshop LA?

Infoshop initially was a channel for collaborations between Intelligence LA (a creative services connecting platform I co-founded with Mathew Swenson) and Paper Chase. But after the election we saw an opportunity to inject print into the political dialogue by providing our network of designers and artists with unfettered use of the press.

What’s one thing that a lot of people don’t understand about printing?

That quality of craftsmanship can make or break a project.

How have you seen the print world change as more and more people are getting their literature on screen?

Our abundant screen time has made any chance for a physical connection more valuable than ever. Print is an effective touchpoint. I see more and more individuals and companies willing to invest in that opportunity.

If you weren’t running a bad ass print shop, what do you think you’d be doing?

I think I’d make a decent lawyer!
